Denver Philharmonic Orchestra to Build a New Stage Inside Central Presbyterian Church

The Denver Philharmonic Orchestra (“DPO”) is pleased to announce it has reached agreement with Central Presbyterian Church (“CPC”) to build a large stage in the chancel area of the church. Construction of this custom performance space located at 1660 Sherman Street in downtown Denver will begin this summer.

The grand opening of the Antonia Brico Stage will be held September 30, 2016, during DPO’s first concert of the 2016–17 Season. The new stage is the namesake of Antonia Brico, founding music director of the DPO (known then as the Denver Businessmen’s Orchestra). Brico was a trailblazer for female classical musicians, as the first female conductor of the New York Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic. The stage is available for use by the DPO, as well as other arts organizations in the Denver metro area.

“I am very much looking forward to the new Brico Stage at Central Presbyterian Church,” DPO Music Director Lawrence Golan said. “Downtown Denver is lacking a viable, mid-sized performance venue and I hope that this will help to fill that void.”

CPC, the DPO’s new home, seats about 900.

“With the construction of the Brico stage, we have also found a new home for the next six seasons,” said DPO Board President Jon Olafson. “Our musicians deserve to play on a beautiful new stage and our patrons will continue to enjoy attending concerts at Central Presbyterian — as they have given us glowing reviews on the new venue!”

About the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra

With its 2015–16 Season, the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates 68 years of providing high-quality symphonic concerts and outreach. The orchestra was founded in 1948 by Dr. Antonia Brico, the first woman to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic and several other major orchestras. The orchestra quickly became known for its ambitious collaborations and performances. The DPO’s mission is to continually redefine the way our community engages with and experiences classical music.
