When I was 10, my mom checked out the 1961 film West Side Story from the high school library.
Dad made popcorn, and we gathered to watch Tony & Maria’s romantic love story, elaborate dance-fights with Riff & Bernardo, and a soaring score by Leonard Bernstein.
Now, I had no clue who Leonard Bernstein was at 10, but I fell in love with the music. And it wasn’t long until I knew all the words to all the songs (with a plea from my mom to not sing “Gee, Officer Krupke” at school.)
Tomorrow, DPO with a Twist: Blended Brass at Dazzle Jazz features Bernstein’s West Side Story suite performed by a quintet of outstanding brass players from the Denver Philharmonic. This intimate classical-and-cocktails set also includes Frank Sinatra, Johann Sebastian Bach, Charlie Smalls and more!
See you there! I’ll be the one in the corner humming along to “America.”
