Some orchestras run on endowments. Others run on tradition. Denver Philharmonic Orchestra runs on people.
Not in an abstract “community matters” way, but literally in the hands and hearts of the volunteers who shape our sound, greet our audiences, and keep the music moving forward. This month, we’re lifting the curtain on the quiet force that makes DPO possible: service freely given.
The Harmonious Whole
Approximately 80% of our musicians volunteer their time. During the week, they’re physicians navigating diagnoses, teachers sparking curiosity, architects designing skylines, lawyers drafting solutions. But when rehearsal nights roll around, they gather as an orchestra, bringing the same dedication to the stage that they bring to their professions. Their commitment is a gift to the entire city.
And they’re joined by another ensemble that never appears on the program: our concert volunteers. They’re the friendly voices scanning tickets, guiding guests to their seats, and keeping the lobby lively with drinks and snacks. They set the tone for the entire evening, often being the first and last faces our patrons meet.
The Ripple Effect
Service doesn’t just strengthen organizations; it strengthens people. Studies from UnitedHealth Group, PMC, and the Mayo Clinic show that volunteers experience:

- Increased sense of meaning and connection
- Reduced isolation and improved social health
- Higher life satisfaction overall
