Fifth Annual International Conducting Workshop, Concert and Competition

February 10–15, 2025

Conduct the award-winning Denver Philharmonic Orchestra and study with Maestros Lawrence Golan and Donald Schleicher. The workshop includes two levels of participation, score study, career development and programming classes, rehearsals with the orchestra, video reviews, a final performance for all participants, and one competition winner will be invited back to guest conduct a piece in the DPO’s 2025–26 Season.

Administered by the International Conducting Institute (ICI) whose mission is to advance the art of conducting by providing conductor workshops with the highest level of instruction, the most podium time, and the most affordable tuition possible in order to help students achieve their career goals. Past ICI students have gone on to be accepted at prestigious masters and doctoral programs, to win assistant conductor jobs at major orchestras, music directorships of youth and professional orchestras, and posts at major universities, and to have successful freelance conducting careers.

Details

Come to the “Mile High City,” Denver, Colorado, to study the art of conducting and great repertoire with two amazing faculty.

This workshop includes:

Score study, career development and programming classes
Four full orchestra sessions or three string ensemble sessions, depending on the level of participation
Video reviews with faculty
Appearance on final public performance for all participants

Levels of Participation

Only 14 active participants will be accepted (six PLP and eight GLP participants). One competition winner, at the discretion of the faculty, will be selected to return the following season to guest conduct a piece on a subscription concert.

Platinum Level Participants: conduct one piece or movement with the full orchestra for DPO’s Happily Ever After concert on February 15 & 16, 2025.
Gold Level Participants: conduct once piece or movement for the concert with a string ensemble
One competition winner will be selected to return the following season to guest conduct a piece on another subscription concert.

Tuition & Schedule

Gold Level Participant (8 only) – $825
Auditors – $250
Participants and Auditors who play in the preconcert string ensemble receive a $150 discount.

Selected participants must confirm their attendance and pay their tuition in full by January 1, 2025

Cancelation Policy
If a canceling participant’s spot is filled by a new student, a tuition refund will be given. If a canceling participant’s spot is not filled, they get a credit for the following season’s DPO Conducting Workshop.

Hotel & Commute

Workshop participants are encouraged to stay near Civic Center Station, the Mapleton Arts Center (MAC), or other areas that best suit their commuting needs. Accommodations in these locations provide convenient access to both rehearsal and performance venues via RTD Bus Route 8 and available ridesharing services.

Accommodation Options:

Affordable Hotels: A variety of budget-friendly hotels are available near Civic Center Station and MAC, offering amenities such as complimentary WiFi, breakfast, and fitness centers.
Room Types and Rates: Multiple room types cater to single or double occupancy, with rates typically ranging from $100 to $200 per night depending on the hotel and room selection.

Transportation:

RTD Bus Route 8: Utilize this primary public transit option for easy travel between Downtown Denver, RiNo, and the Mapleton Arts Center.
Ridesharing Services: For late evening returns or additional convenience, ridesharing services like Uber, Lyft, and the local Driver’s Co-Op of Colorado are recommended.

Covid

The Denver Philharmonic will follow guidance from local, state and federal officials regarding any Covid-19 policies and protocols that may be required during the workshop. If the workshop must be canceled due to the continuing pandemic, all tuition fees will be returned. However, we cannot reimburse any travel expenses or return the application fee. We strongly suggest that all participants purchase travel insurance that specifically covers COVID-related cancellations.
