A Note from Music Director Lawrence Golan
Dear Friends,
Our 2018–19 season is finally upon us! Our opening night concert, Heroes, will take place on September 28 with two monumental pieces.
The first is the Violin Concerto No. 1 by Niccolò Paganini, considered one of the greatest violinists of all time. Without question, Paganini is known for having composed some of the most difficult music for the violin. Our soloist, Xiao Liu, is a hero just for attempting to play this piece. When he was 24 years old, Xiao was recruited as a violin professor by China’s top music academy, the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, becoming the conservatory’s youngest violin professor.
The second piece on the program is Ludwig van Beethoven’s Third Symphony, the “Eroica” (Heroic) Symphony. An absolute staple of the standard orchestral repertoire, the symphony is a very heroic piece, full of excitement and energy as well as beauty and lyricism. The symphony was originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, however, Beethoven became disenchanted with the French leader and withdrew the dedication after Napoleon declared himself emperor!
We look forward to seeing you on opening night for Heroes!
